Peekskill

Peekskill is a town in Westchester County on the bay of the Hudson River in New York across from Jones Point. 10 years ago it had a population of 22,000. It is 50 miles north of New York City. It is a sister town to Castlebar, Co Mayo. Peekskill is known to be an early American industrial centre. Crayola, formerly The Binney & Smith Company started in the Peekskill Chemical Company at Annsville in 1864. After the population started to decline, Peekskill began to encourage artists to move there by offering them low interest rates. This helped artists buy buildings and convert them into useful artist centres. This encouraged the Paramount Center for the Arts which is now the area's cultural heart with music, comedy, drama and independent films. Peekskill also includes the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, and the Peekskill Coffee House, which showcases aspiring actors.
